A world of diversity at PELA!

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

One thing we love about our school is that students come to Portland English Language Academy from all over the world.   We always have a great mix of students from different countries, which creates a rich environment not only for English language learning but also for many multicultural experiences.

Students from Saudi Arabia, Colombia, Japan, Brazil, Taiwan, Korea and Mexico

Last month, we welcomed students from countries such as Argentina, Pakistan, Korea, Ukraine, Colombia, Libya, Brazil, Taiwan and Malaysia

This month we will be joined by students from Turkey, Russia, China, Georgia (in Asia)Spain, Vietnam,  Japan and Saudi Arabia!

We hope you can join us soon and make many life-long friends with people from all around the world.

Our school is like a family. I’m so happy to be studying here!

In addition to the open art galleries, First Thursday also hosts a Street Art Fair on NW 13th Avenue, just a 10-minute walk from PELA. At the Street Art Fair, many up-and-coming local artists show and sell their art–it is like a giant, open-air art show!

Generally, First Thursday hours are Thursday evening, 6pm to 9pm. Most galleries are in NW Portland, between NW Everett & Hoyt Streets, and between 6th & 13th Avenue. See a map of First Thursday Galleries here.

PELA News: Oregon’s amazing Wine-Country!

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

On May 8th, the Bison Building hosts the 6th annual Portland Indie Wine Festival, a delicious experience where you can taste the Northwest’s top 40 artisinal wineries.  Unlike most other wineries in Oregon, which have ”tasting rooms” where you can try their wines, the wines at the Indie Wine Festival can only be tasted in local restaurants and bars.

Later this month, during the 2010 Memorial Weekend in the Wine Country, over a hundred other wineries open their doors to public for three days!  Many of these wineries are not open at any other time during the year. At these wineries, you can meet winemakers, and taste their wines, drink wine right out of the barrel, try local cheeses and appetizers, and take advantage of special discount sales on some wines.  Some wineries have live music and some charge a tasting fee.

PELA News: Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Beginning tomorrow, PELA students will be heading down to Waterfront Park to participate in Portland’s annual Cinco de Mayo Festival. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican-American holiday, begun in 1967 by Americans of Mexican ancestry, celebrating the culture of Mexico. Over 300,000 people come to this 5-day festival in Portland each year to enjoy Mexican food, music and culture.

From now until the end of summer, Portlanders will be able to go to various food, drink and cultural festivals every weekend in and around downtown Portland.

PELA News: Tulips and Tote bags!

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Later this month, PELA will be taking students down to one of Oregon’s first “spring” festivals of the year: The Woodburn Tulip Festival! Located about 40 miles south of Portland, the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm hosts a month-long festival, with live music and dance, pony rides, wine-tasting and gourmet food samples, along with hot balloon rides!

That same day, we will be stopping at the Woodburn Outlet Mall, located about 40 minutes south of Portland, which has over 70 brand-name discount stores.  Outlet Malls are places where you can find brand-name company selling their products at cheaper prices than you find in normal stores.  You can find great sales every day at Nike, Coach, DKNY, Banana Republic, GAP, Calvin Klein, and much more! There, students can take advantage of Oregon’s No Sales Tax!  Oregon is one of the only states that has sales tax, which makes our state a great place to visit and study in!

PELA News: March Madness & Irish Mayhem!

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Every march, Portland turns Irish and celebrates St. Patrick’s Day at the Kell’s St. Patrick’s Irish Festival.  At this 6-day long festival you can enjoy traditional Irish food and drink, fantastic live music and dance.  Over 20,000 people attend this outdoor festival.

Portland has a very strong Irish-American cultural life, with several popular Irish bars and monthly Irish Ceili dances throughout the city.  Last November, a dozen PELA students were able to go to one of the local Ceili dances and learn Irish line dancing!

In addition to Portland turning green for a week, on March 13 PELA students got to witness one of the stranger events in the United States: the Portland Urban Iditarod!  In this crazy race, teams of Portlanders push shopping carts on a 4-mile loop through the streets of Portland, dressed in costumes and silly clothes and helping to make Portland one of the more interesting cities to live in the United States!

Pirates and Miniature Golf? Arrgh!

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

On March 16, PELA is taking students to try out a truly unique Portland activity: Blacklight, 3-D, Pirate Miniature Golf! Glowing Greens Miniature Golf, is found under the Portland Hilton Hotel, just a block from Pioneer Square.  At Glowing Greens, you are given a glow-in-the-dark golf ball and a pair of 3-D glasses; after that you must use all your skills to navigate your golf ball through 18 holes, each decorated with Pirates and skeletons like scenes out of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies!

Portland is a great place to enjoy some unusual American activities.  There are several “paintball” centers, where you can compete in various games and use paint-guns to hit opponents.

There are also “lasertag” centers, where you use laser guns to shoot opponents and see who is the last person standing!
